Rebel Space

25 June 2016

In July 2016, the UCL Grand Challenge of Sustainable Cities funded RESOLVE's 'Rebel Space', part of the London Design Festival.

This interdisciplinary installation was a focal point for the Brixton Design Trail. The project involved building a temporary exhibition space using lo-fi, recycled facade materials, and then hosting a series of workshops covering social and interdisciplinary concepts in Engineering and Architecture to engaged schools and the local community. This included a collaboration with UCL Engineering Schools Engagement to target London youth from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The space was also used to host talks and exhibitions for the local community during the London Design Festival (17th to the 25th of September). The project is continuing via the establishment of a community design, graduate-led think-tank who will work cooperatively with Lambeth Council to execute innovative, low-cost public engagement projects.

Resolve is an interdisciplinary design collective that aims to solve multi-scalar social challenges using innovative design and interdisciplinary approaches. Akil Scafe-Smith (Arts & Science BASc, 2016) and Gameli Ladzekpo (Engineering with Business Finance, MEng, 2016), two recent graduates from UCL, founded the collective.

The project was widely reported to be a success, with plaudits from key influencers in academic spheres as well as commendation for being trailblazers from the Brixton Design Trail organisers themselves.
