Addressing the challenges of the UK's ‘left behind places’ has attracted increasing attention from researchers and policy makers. Deficits in ‘social infrastructure’ – ‘the physical places and organisations that shape the way people interact’ – have been identified as a key component in producing left behindness. In their new book, ‘Social Infrastructure and Left-behind Places’, John Tomaney et al, explore this question. Based on a deep place study of a former mining village in County Durham, they examine the making, unmaking and remaking of social infrastructure and set out tasks for policymakers if they are to effectively tackle this issue.

The event, in collaboration with UCL Public Policy, will be held on Wednesday 24 January from 18.00 - 20.00 in Room 6.02, Bartlett School of Architecture.

At the launch John Tomaney, Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at UCL will respond to a panel including:

  • Sarah Chaytor, Director of Research Strategy & Policy at UCL (Chair)
  • Julian Coman, Associate Editor, The Guardian
  • Helen Goulden, Chief Executive Officer, The Young Foundation
  • Professor Marc Stears, Director of the UCL Policy Lab.

The event will be followed by a drinks reception.

*The event will be recorded*.
