Research funding with partners based in Stockholm

Joint seed funding is available for research collaborations with Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University.

The Cities Partnerships Programme Stockholm, a collaboration between UCL and the Stockholm Trio of Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University (KI, KTH, and SU), is pleased to announce a new round of joint research funding. This initiative is supported by the three Swedish universities.

The funding is intended to bolster collaborative research projects and further strengthen the existing partnerships among these four institutions. The primary goal of this funding is to facilitate the formation of international teams that will be well-positioned to apply for external research funding.

The fund intends to support collaborations in five key research areas:

1. Mental health:

  • Safety
  • Risk management
  • Crisis preparedness

2. Sustainable transportation:

  • Environmental impact
  • Health impact

3. Digital tools:

  • Decision making
  • Monitoring
  • Preparedness
  • Healthcare accessibility

4. Communicable diseases

5. Urban systems

  • Energy
  • Consumption
  • Food
  • Nature-based resources / biodiversity

Projects and funding

  • Each proposal must include a Co-PI from UCL and a lead PI from KI, KTH, or SU. There must be more than one researcher i.e. academic member of staff, post-doctoral researcher, or PhD student from each partner on the project team.
  • The fund is open to proposals on the five research areas listed above, across all disciplines.
  • Projects will be funded for a period up to 18 months (with review after 12), starting from December 2023.
  • Proposals that can demonstrate follow-up and sustainability beyond the initial funding period are particularly encouraged.
  • Projects which have already been part of the collaborative network may be prioritised. Applications for new projects are also welcome.
  • The seed funding granted will be up to 60,000 SEK per participating Swedish institution in each project.  UCL will not contribute any funds to this call.

Eligibility

  • Academic staff members from all disciplines and at all levels are welcome to apply. We particularly encourage early career researchers to apply.
  • Applicants do not need to have a permanent post, but they must have an existing contract (or, in the case of KI, affiliation) at the time of application, and that contract must cover the full period of the grant.
  • Previous applicants and award holders are eligible to apply for this fund, as long as there is a clear rationale that the new project proposal is either an innovative development of the previous project or a new project. The previous project needs to have submitted a final report in order for the new proposal to be eligible.

How to apply

  1. Please refer to the guidelines for applicants before completing this form.
  2. This is a joint call and a single application should be submitted by the lead PI from KI, KTH, or SU.
  3. The deadline for applications is Tuesday 21 November 2023 (22h59 UK time, 23h59 Swedish time).
  4. Applications must be submitted via the online application form:
