Google Earth Tours

Although the use of virtual globes, and in particular Google Earth, is increasingly popular in both formal and informal education, previous studies revealed that students tend to use tours passively.

This project aimed at investigating how Google Earth Tours (GETs) can be best combined with related student activities, i.e. how they can be integrated into an Active Learning approach.

A Human-Computer Interaction approach was used to gather both qualitative and quantitative, including eye-tracking data in order to understand the elements and on-screen features of the virtual landscape that attract user’s attention.

Based on the findings a set of guidelines and podcasts were produced that offer concrete guidance on how to integrate Google Earth Tours into an Active Learning approach.
