Midsummer in Sweden

Staff and students of the UCL Geography Environmental Change Research Centre were at the 14th International Paleolimnology Symposium in Stockholm on 17-21 June 2018.

There were excellent presentations by PhD researchers Richard Walton, Lucy Roberts and Anna March, and staff contributions on a range of palaeolimnological themes by Izzy Bishop, Simon Turner, Jonathan Holmes, Neil Rose, Anson Mackay and Helen Bennion.  Anne-Lise Jourdan was also there from the Bloomsbury Environmental Isotope Facility (BEIF).

The wider ECRC influence was reflected in the opportunity to catch up with former UCL colleagues, including Catherine Dalton, Nadia Solovieva, Dave Ryves, Gavin Simpson, Patrick Rioual, Ginnie Panizzo, George Swann, Emma Pearson and Jen Adams.

The social highlight of the meeting was the Conference Dinner, which followed the Swedish student tradition of a ’sittning’, involving a three-course meal and musical entertainment, including a memorable rendition of the song 'Helan Gar', translated (in its "Englified" version) to 'Hell and Gore', as well as an Abba-medley.

Thanks for the music indeed!! Everyone also enjoyed the boat trip through the Stockholm archipelago.

Helen Bennion was elected as Chair of the International Paleolimnology Association for the next 3 years, with former UCL PhD researcher, Virginia Panizzo, now at the University of Nottingham, elected as Vice Chair.
