Research summary

Jo Evans has published widely on Spanish-language film and literature, and her research has interdisciplinary relevance for Film Studies, Gender Studies and Psychoanalysis. Her first monograph on the Spanish-Basque poet Ángela Figuera Aymerich was published by Tamesis in 1996, and her second, on the director Julio Medem was published by Grant & Cutler in 2007. She joined the Executive Editorial Board of the Bulletin of Spanish Studies in 2013 as lead editor of the new the Bulletin of Spanish Visual Studies. In this role she has co-edited and contributed to editions including the Inaugural Hispanic Visual Studies Issue: Territories of the Visual (March 2015), and the Inaugural Edition of the Bulletin of Spanish Visual Studies: Animals in Visual Hispanism (April, 2017). She recently directed a three-year Leverhulme Trust funded research project (2015-18) on the Spanish-Mexican director, Luis Bunuel, and has co-edited, with Leverhulme Trust-funded Senior Research Assistant, Dr Breixo Viejo, Luis Buñuel: Correspondencia escogida (Madrid: Cátedra, 2018), and Luis Buñuel: A Life in Letters (New York: Bloomsbury, 2019).

Teaching summary

Jo Evans has designed, introduced and convened over twenty new BA and MA course modules on Spanish-language narrative, drama, poetry, and film at UCL. Her undergraduate modules focus on Spanish film from the 1920s onwards, and on the work of the Spanish-Mexican director, Luis Buñuel. She convenes an MA course unit on Spanish film (1975 onwards) and contributes to MA core courses for the MA in European Studies, UCL Centre for Intercultural Studies, and for the 'Issues in Global Migration' MA.

Biography

Jo Evans (BA, Cambridge University; PhD, Cambridge University) is Professor in Spanish Film, Literature and Culture. She is a General Editor of the Bulletin of Spanish Studies, and lead editor of the Bulletin of Spanish Visual Studies. She was a Lecturer at Edinburgh University (1989-1994), and Guest Lecturer at Cambridge University (Spring Term 2008), and the School of Modern Languages, and Department of Media Arts, Royal Holloway (Spring Term 2009). She has been a Special Guest of the Institute for Contemporary Arts (London) and the Casa Bunuel (Instituto de la Cinematografia y de las Artes Audiovisuales (Mexico City); and an Invited Speaker at the Cervantes Institute (London); the Barbican and the British Film Institute. She was the advisor on Spanish film for the Andrew Graham-Dixon series, The Art of Spain (BBC4, 2008) and has been a regular lecturer for the Prince's Teaching Institute, and has introduced Spanish Language films to A-level students and teachers at cinemas across London for Film Education and the National Schools Film Week.
