Research summary
Office hour: Fridays 1-2 pm during term time, or by appointment.
My research interests include German memory culture in the nineteenth century, nationalism and nation building, Russian literature, and travel writing.
In my first book, I analyse the historical works of Wilhelm Raabe, a leading proponent of German Realism, and compared his take on German history with contemporaneous historiographic sources. My aim was to show the vital role of cultural memory in political discourses at the time, even though the term itself had not yet been coined.
Currently, I'm working on a study exploring the interconnections of landscape and nationalism during National Socialism.
Since 2017, I have been organising a UK-wide network of German ab initio teachers in HE, GAIN (German Ab Initio Network). We hold annual meetings at different host institutions and exchange expertise and teaching materials. Please contact me if you would like to join.
