Research summary
Beatrice
Sica is a scholar in Italian literature and cultural studies and her expertise
is in modern and contemporary Italian literature and culture in a European
context. Her research interests include the
avant-gardes (Futurism Dada, Surrealism); Italian literature and art during
Fascism; magical realism and fantastic literature; poetry; cultural exchanges
between Italy and other countries, particularly France and the United States of
America. She also likes to address cross-fertilizations of words and images and
consider literature and the arts in their historical contexts, looking at their
role in shaping our views, identities, and ideologies.
She welcomes proposals for research projects across a broad range of modern
and contemporary Italian literary and cultural topics. She is happy to
supervise work on any aspect of Italian poetry, the European avant-gardes,
Italy’s intellectuals under Fascism, Italian writers and artists in the
nineteenth and twentieth century, the reception of writers (e.g. Dante,
Ariosto) and artists (e.g. Renaissance painters) from previous times in the
nineteenth and twentieth century; the reception of Italian authors outside
Italy as well as that of non-Italian authors in the peninsula.
Teaching summary
Beatrice Sica's teaching ranges from introductory courses on modern and contemporary European culture to more specialized courses on Italian literature and arts, European avant-gardes, Futurism, and Surrealism. She teaches with a transnational and interdisciplinary approach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Biography
Before joining UCL, Beatrice Sica studied and worked in Italy, France, and the US at some of the leading research institutions in the world: Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, New York university, Collège de France in Paris, and Harvard University.
