Research summary

Beatrice Sica is a scholar in Italian literature and cultural studies and her expertise is in modern and contemporary Italian literature and culture in a European context. Her research interests include the avant-gardes (Futurism Dada, Surrealism); Italian literature and art during Fascism; magical realism and fantastic literature; poetry; cultural exchanges between Italy and other countries, particularly France and the United States of America. She also likes to address cross-fertilizations of words and images and consider literature and the arts in their historical contexts, looking at their role in shaping our views, identities, and ideologies.

She welcomes proposals for research projects across a broad range of modern and contemporary Italian literary and cultural topics. She is happy to supervise work on any aspect of Italian poetry, the European avant-gardes, Italy’s intellectuals under Fascism, Italian writers and artists in the nineteenth and twentieth century, the reception of writers (e.g. Dante, Ariosto) and artists (e.g. Renaissance painters) from previous times in the nineteenth and twentieth century; the reception of Italian authors outside Italy as well as that of non-Italian authors in the peninsula.
