We are pleased to announce the publication Dr Thibaut Maus de Rolley's new book - Moi, Louis Gaufridy (Paris: Les Belles Lettres, 2023).
The 1611 criminal trial of Louis Gaufridy in Aix-en-Provence was a seminal case of witchcraft and demonic possession resulting from the exorcisms of two young nuns who accused Gaufridy, a Marseilles priest, of being a witch and causing their possession. Gaufridy’s witchcraft confession, printed immediately after his execution, at the height of the European witch hunt, soon turned the case into a cause célèbre. Both a historical and a literary inquiry, Moi, Louis Gaufridy, examines at close quarters how Gaufridy’s confession was produced and shaped during his trial, and how it shaped in turn the contemporary accounts of the case that quickly circulated, in many forms, in France and Europe. The book also comprises the critical edition of three previously unpublished pamphlets on the case.
