Research Excellence Framework Assessment Results
25 May 2022

We are delighted to share the results of the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessment. With 93% of our research categorised as ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’, UCL has placed second in the UK for research power. Carried out every six to seven years, the REF assessment looks at the quality of research across 157 UK universities, as well as the real-world impact of this research. Since the last REF assessment in 2014, UCL’s overall score increased from 3.22 (out of 4.0) to 3.50. Here at SELCS, we are particularly happy to learn that we have improved on our 2014 performance at subject level to place 6th in the UK and 1st in London for research power. We hope that our staff and students are proud to be part of an institution which has such strong research power and an outstanding impact on the world around us!
