Abstract
This presentation explores the role of African translators as entrepreneurs in a fast-changing context of globalisation and digitalisation. Based on a personal experience backed by a keen observation of a wide range of phenomena, we review a few theoretical and practical topics relating to translation as a profession – especially from a sole proprietorship perspective. While focusing primarily on African settings, we highlight the impact of transpreneurs – one-translator business owners – review their skillsets and point out some best practices in a drive to shed more light on the life of a typical African freelance translator.
Bionote
A PhD researcher in Translation Studies at ESIT/Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris, France, under the supervision of Prof. Isabelle Collombat, Carlos Djomo does research on principles, practices, methods and resources that can help translators become (better) entrepreneurs, thereby transitioning from mere content mediators into business owners with both a value and an impact. As such, he is interested in new media, digital tools, as well as ergonomics in translation.
