Why study population health?

Rapid economic and social changes across the world are highlighting the multiple influences on people’s health.

Our health is shaped by a convergence of factors: our genes, the air we breathe, the food we eat, the work we do, the taxes we pay, the places we live, and the people we know. All influence our physical and mental wellbeing.Simultaneously, advances in gene technology and data sciences are giving us the ability to understand patterns of health and disease across populations to an extent impossible previously.

What is population health?

The population health approach seeks to unite our knowledge of the underlying factors that cause ill-health – or lead to its improvement.

We study the patterns of health and disease across societies, and act to protect, promote and improve people’s health across the life course. This includes taking action outside the health sector – in our natural and built environments, our societies and our economies.

Population health is particularly concerned to improve health equity, or unfair differences within and between populations, wherever they are in the world.
