ICLS researchers Anne McMunn and Rebecca Lacey have secured £800,000 funding to undertake research into inequalities in informal caregiving over the adult life course in Europe.

The research, which will be carried out by an international consortium of researchers in the UK, Germany, Norway and Spain has been funded by the JPI More Years Better Lives programme and starts in May 2021.

The team will make use of European longitudinal datasets to examine inequities in employment, social participation and health between carers and non-carers at different life stages, as well as the gender, socioeconomic and ethnic differences in the social, economic and health consequences of caregiving. Comparisons in these life course care inequalities will be made across European country contexts, with a specific focus on young adult carers as well as those providing care in mid- and later-life.

Where data is available, the initial impact of changes in informal care related to the COVID-19 pandemic will also be looked at and analysed.

The research team plans to work closely with a range of carer-focused charities in the different countries to communicate findings from the research.
