The way we research health matters. Despite a growing awareness of stark health inequalities across the UK, most health research does not involve people from marginalised and minority groups. This under-representation not only hides the experiences of people most at risk of poor health, but also prevents appropriate solutions from being developed.

To start addressing this issue, the UCL (University College London) Department of Behavioural Science and Health is organising a knowledge exchange workshop with people who identify as ethnic minorities. The aim of the project is to better understand which barriers might prevent ethnic minorities from participating in health research, and to collaboratively produce a plan of action for making participation more equitable.

The workshop will take place on June 24th, at UCL, from 10am to 4pm. Lunch and refreshments will be provided, and participants will be reimbursed a £100 voucher each for their time.

The morning will be dedicated to creating a shared understanding of health research, health inequalities by ethnicity, and what is currently known about barriers to participation. This session will be developed so that no previous knowledge or experience of health research is needed to fully participate in the conversation. In the afternoon, the ideas gathered by the group will be collaboratively turned into an action plan, with the aim of producing practical solutions and guidelines for researchers to overcome barriers to participation in health research.
