Prof Polina Bayvel, Head of the Optical Networks Group, receiving the prestigious Humboldt Research Award

Professor Polina Bayvel has been honoured with the internationally renowned Humboldt Research Award (Humboldt-Forschungspreis) in recognition of her scientific accomplishments. This global accolade recognises exemplary researchers whose work contributes significantly to their field through groundbreaking and innovative discoveries.

At the Humboldt Symposium for Research Award Winners in Bamberg, Prof Bayvel was one of four academics to deliver a talk at the Symposium for Research Award Winners. Her talk entitled, “Next-generation optical networks – seeing through the cloud” was focused on the development of optical networks and their role in underpinning the global communications infrastructure. It examined how the growth in digital communications demand fuelled by new services, online working and AI can be sustained in next-generation, high-capacity, multiwavelength optical networks. Particularly as they will be operating over vastly different distances and timescales, spanning on-chip optical processors, data centres and trans-oceanic distances.

Privileged and honoured to be the recipient of the Humboldt Research Award – and join the extensive Humboldt family. This award allows me to collaborate with colleagues in Germany and I am grateful to my hosts at the Technical University of Munich, Prof Gerhard Kramer and Prof Norbert Hanik. It also allows me to host postdoctoral researchers from Germany for up to 24 months under the Feodor Lynen Research Scholarship.

Professor Bayvel's achievements underscore her commitment to research excellence.
