CPD Doctorate in Educational Psychology Alumni

Dr Richard Egan's profile (DEdPsy 2016)

Dr Richard Egan

What is your current role?
I am Senior Educational Psychologist with the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) at the Department of Education and Skills, Ireland.

What did you find particularly useful about the CPD Doctorate in Educational Psychology programme at UCL?
The programme increased my ability to critique my work and those of others and allowed me to discern what was most important. It increased my confidence and competence in dealing with many day to day issues in my practice, thus allowing me to become more effective.

The most useful aspect of the course was completing research that required me to fully appreciate, reflect and analyse the nature of the research question and to challenge my perspectives. This was supported by my interactions with UCL staff and my class cohort throughout the doctorate. Coupled with this was the ability to access a range of publications through the electronic library system, which was invaluable for distance learning. UCL endeavoured to create a positive experience for the student and adapted to meet my learning style.

How has doing the DEdPsy at UCL developed your CPD / career?
In terms of my career, I have progressed since graduation to a Senior post in my EPS. I have gained greater appreciation of how to critique data/research. This is invaluable in deciding how to approach my own CPD needs and when promoting interventions/methods to improve children’s lives in schools; ensuring that these are exhibiting the best evidence from a range of sources.

I would highly recommend that EPs wishing to upskill to a doctoral level qualification consider UCL as an excellent choice for progressing their learning and career.
