Ronald Aylmer Fisher (1890 - 1962)

Ronald Aylmer Fisher held a chair in the UCL Department of Eugenics. His many contributions include the application of t and F tests to regression coefficients and proposing the method of maximum likelihood estimation.

Fisher was born in Finchley, North London. In 1896 his family moved to Heath House, North End Way, Hampstead, near to Queen Mary’s Hospital – the house, now renamed Inverforth House, bears a blue plaque to his memory. About ten years later the family moved to Streatham in south London. For a time after leaving college he worked in the City of London while lodging in Talgarth Road, West Kensington.
