New study on cranial neuralgias available in April

21 April 2022

A new volume on trigeminal neuralgia for the Oxford Pain Management Library series has been co-edited by Professor Joanna Zakrzewska.

Trigeminal Neuralgia and other Cranial Neuralgias (Oxford University Press, 2022)

Trigeminal Neuralgia and Other Cranial Neuralgias, co-edited by Professor Zakrzewska (UCL Eastman Dental Institute) and Professor Nurmikko Turo (Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust), will be published by Oxford University Press in April.

This is the first book on trigeminal neuralgia and related conditions to be written by an international multidisciplinary group of over 30 experts. It features medical and dental specialists alongside psychologists, a visual artist, and chapters written by patients.

While not as common as conditions such as migraine, trigeminal and related neuralgias (facial pain conditions that cause disabling pain attacks) affect over 1% of the population. Studies show that delayed diagnoses and mismanagement are common and can lead to depression and suicide, making this an essential area for further investigation.

The book underpins the case for these conditions to be recognised and adequately treated in clinical practice.

It includes chapters on the epidemiology of trigeminal neuralgia, trigeminal neuropathy, psychological factors in the experience of neuralgia, and surgical treatments for trigeminal neuralgia. Patient histories are used to illustrate the key features and management.

The volume accommodates a variety of learning styles. Each chapter contains case scenarios, continuing professional development questions and answers, key points, and mind maps. It has been written and produced in 20 months, creating a fully up-to-date resource for the condition.

Trigeminal Neuralgia and Other Cranial Neuralgias is available from 28 April. Receive a 30% discount on the cover price with the promotional code AMPROMD9.
