GEOL0012 Global Geophysics

The aim of the course is to introduce the concepts, methods and results of solid Earth geophysics. The course examines the theory, application and limitations of geophysical methods and reviews their contribution to our knowledge of the surface and interior of the Earth.

  • the shape of the Earth, isostasy and moment of inertia,
  • Elasticity and equations of state,
  • Seismic waves, refraction and reflection seismology,
  • Earthquakes, cause, mechanism, location, distribution, magnitude, intensity, prediction control
  • Thermodynamics, laws of thermodynamics, free energies, thermoelastic coupling
  • The deep Earth, Earth structure, seismic ray paths, Earth composition, mineralogy, physical properties and processes
  • Thermal evolution, heat sources, isotopes, rheology, viscosity, diffusion, creep, mantle, convection, geotherm
  • Magnetism, magnetic moments, magnetic field, Earth's core, geodynamo, reversals, planetary magnetism
