Group Projects & Industry Placements
Our PhD students are well-trained in data-intensive science including machine learning techniques and big data challenges. Each student participates in two industry-led projects, a Group Project and Industry Placement. They gain a different kind of hands-on experience while enhancing their skills in a practical setting.

Group Projects
With nearly 30 successful projects under our belt, we've seen firsthand the value our first-year students bring to Group Projects at no direct cost to our partners. As an industry partner, you can directly shape the learning experiences of our students and influence the development of future data scientists.
In these short-term group projects, partners propose real-world challenges to be tackled by teams of three to four junior PhD students skilled in data-intensive techniques like statistical analysis, machine learning, algorithm development, and software development. Over a three-month period, these students work half-time to apply their academic knowledge and innovative problem-solving skills and bring projects to life.
Guided by industry experts and UCL academics, our students deliver solutions rooted in cutting-edge data science techniques. Select projects may also benefit from the added expertise of our talented MSc students. Our past collaborations have yielded success across various fields, with project impacts shared through blog posts, white papers, and reports, enhancing the visibility of our industry partners.
Industry Placements
This initiative provides our PhD students with an invaluable immersive industry experience. For industry partners, it is an opportunity to enhance their talent pipeline with skilled advanced PhD students specializing in data-intensive science techniques trained on cutting-edge scientific data.
With over 45 successful industry placements, UCL's industry placement program offers a proven way to enhance your project outcomes with top-tier talent. Partners report significant project advancements and valuable contributions to the team. Many students earn positions within their organizations post-completion.
In this program, industry partners propose projects that can leverage data-intensive techniques like statistical analysis, machine learning, and algorithm development. Our students then commit to a full-time, six-month placement, applying their academic prowess and innovative problem-solving to real-world scenarios.
Participation not only boosts your projects but also nurtures future data scientists. Students are co-funded by industry partners at a highly competitive rate, with UCL matching all placement funds. This ensures sustained support for talented data science students. So far, we've raised £500,000 of PhD funding directly from industry partners!
