UCL Computer Science celebrates Black History Month 2023 “Saluting our CS-isters”
14 November 2023
This year, we salute our sisters and bring their achievements to the forefront, highlighting their invaluable contributions to computer science and technology.
Black History Month is a significant time that celebrates and honours the achievements and contributions of the Black community throughout history. It is time to recognise the struggles, triumphs, and resilience of Black individuals who have left an indelible mark on society.
The UCL Computer Science Race Equality Working group organised an event last month to shine a spotlight on women in tech in line with this year’s theme, “Saluting Our Sisters”.
Black women have played a pivotal role in shaping history, yet their stories and accomplishments have often been overshadowed and undervalued. This year, UCL Computer Science brought together a panel of Black women to discuss the future of AI and emerging technologies. Panellists included:
- Morenike Magbagbeola (Robotics Engineer at Global Logic)
- Natasha Musonda (Senior Analyst at Avanade)
- Dr Rashada Harry, (Enterprise technologist and Account Director at Amazon Web Services)
- Favour Borokini (PhD student at Nottingham University, African AI and tech ethics researcher).
The panel discussed their experiences, highs and lows sharing insight into their career journeys. Participants had opportunities to ask questions and network after the panel discussion and enjoyed the social networking session with delicious Caribbean food.
Attendees from the event shared some feedback about the celebration:
“I liked the diversity of the panel, and each had a different story and experience to share with us. It was very inspiring and has left me with much thought about where I, as a black woman, would like to take my career and what benefits and impact it will have on me along the way.”
“It was uplifting to see Black women from the tech and STEM community, actually see[ing] their faces and hear[ing] and identify[ing] with their struggles along their journey to succession. Thank you for giving them a voice and for giving us the opportunity to hear their voices.”
Commenting on the event, Race Equality Co-Lead and EDI Officer, Kiran Ahmed, said:
“It is crucial to use Black History Month as a platform to recognise, uplift, and celebrate Black women who have been pioneers, advocates, and change-makers. Their perseverance in the face of adversity and their unwavering commitment to equality and social progress serve as an inspiration for us all.”
As we celebrate Black History Month, let us ensure that the stories, struggles, and triumphs of our sisters are heard, acknowledged, and celebrated. By highlighting their accomplishments, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society that recognises the invaluable contributions of Black women and ensures that their legacies live on for generations to come.
UCL Computer Science would like to thank the CS Race Equality Working Group, the panellists and supporting staff for organising this brilliant event. We look forward to hosting next year’s celebration.
