Life Learning and Certificate of Higher Education in the Classical World

Explore the rich heritage of Greece and Rome at a top department for the study of the ancient world, rated highly for its teaching and consistently outstanding in its research.

What is Life Learning?

Life Learning is a chance for you to follow one or two of our modules without enrolling fully as a student.

The Department of Greek and Latin at UCL has an unrivalled range of modules, some taught in the original languages, some taught in translation. Most of these modules are available outside our degree programmes for those wishing to study for personal development or intellectual pleasure. The Department regularly admits Life Learning students, provided that they have the appropriate pre-requisite for the module(s) in which they are interested. (We also have to make sure that there is space on particular modules for existing students within the Department, but this does not usually present problems.) LL students come from a wide variety of backgrounds: retired people, mature students wishing to prepare for full-time education in the future, general enthusiasts, former students from the Department who wish to keep their experience of the Classical World alive, and teachers wishing to broaden their repertoire have all applied to us in the past.

Modules run by the Department are scheduled at fixed times, which cannot be changed. Classes are timetabled between 9am and 6pm (see the Departmental module list for further details).

How does Life Learning work?

LL students participate in and contribute to modules in the same way as UCL students. However, LL is not formally accredited and students are not entitled to take the formal exam at the end of the year, although we have in the past allowed LL students to sit an exam informally within the department if they wish to. Once they have been admitted to the Department, LL students are entitled to have access to the UCL library with reference rights only.  If they wish to have borrowing rights, they need to request this from the Department who will arrange it with the UCL Library.  There is an extra fee of £150 for Library borrowing rights.

Current rates for LL students per module

For 2024/25: £420 per 15 credit module / £840 per 30 credit module.

What is the Certificate in Higher Education (CertHE) in the Classical World?

This flexible programme is aimed at students who would like to obtain an academic qualification, but are not able to commit to a full degree programme straightaway. Students take 120 credits of undergraduate modules offered by UCL Greek and Latin, including at least 30 credits of language and at least 60 credits each of modules focusing on Greek and Roman material. By taking the CertHE you will earn credit which can be applied to a full degree-programme, should you so wish, in future years. The CertHE is cognate with the BA Classics and the Ancient World and the BA Classics and the Ancient World with Study Abroad programmes.

How does the Certificate of Higher Education in the Classical World work?

CertHE students participate in and contribute to modules in the same way as other UCL students. The CertHE is formally accredited and students will submit coursework and take formal exams like any student on a full-degree pathway. There is little limit on the way in which 120 credits can be achieved, from a one-year full time programme to a four-year modular programme. Specific modules available in any given year are listed on our undergraduate modules pages.
