8 February 2021

UCL has received a donation of more than £11m for research and teaching on the history, heritage and languages of Mesopotamia, the ancient 'land between two rivers' that is now home to modern-day Iraq, Northern Syria and Eastern Turkey. Thanks to the generosity of this donation, the Department of Greek and Latin has appointed an Associate Professor in Ancient Middle Eastern Languages. We are delighted to welcome Dr Mark Weeden to the Department from September 2021. Students will be able to study cuneiform languages such as Akkadian, Sumerian, and Hittite; and Hittite will already be available to students in the academic year 2021-22.
