UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health to host new NIHR Policy Research Unit for the health of children and families

1 August, 2023

The National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) has launched a new set of NIHR Policy Research Units to undertake research to inform decision-making by government and arms-length bodies.

The UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health will lead the new NIHR Children and Families Policy Research Unit (CPRU) from January 2024 for five years under the co-directorship of Professor Ruth Gilbert (UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health) and Dr Jenny Woodman (UCL Social Research Institute in the Institute of Education and Thomas Coram Research Institute).

The NIHR Children and Families Policy Research Unit will conduct research on priority policy areas for child and family health for the Department of Health and Social Care, such as health inequalities, early years support for children and parents, support from health, education and social care for children and young people affected by chronic physical or mental health conditions, and services to address family violence.

The overall aim of the NIHR Children and Families PRU is to conduct high-quality research to support the development of evidence-based policy to improve the health of children and families and to develop methods and data resources to improve the quality and timeliness of evidence for policy.

With this important funding, we will be able to work with analysts and policy colleagues at the Department of Health and Social Care and other government departments to generate and present high quality evidence at the right time to support their decisions. We research what makes children healthier, taking into account the environments in which they live, the places they spend time, the health of their parents and carers and siblings and the health, education and other services they and their families use." Dr Jenny Woodman, CPRU co-director

The new NIHR CPRU is  a collaboration between:

  • UCL (Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health and Institute of Education)
  • University of Bristol
  • University of Oxford
  • University of Manchester
  • University of Newcastle
