SIOP 2024

Special mention to our colleague Laura Botta – from the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milano, Italy, and co-PI of the second phase of BENCHISTA – who represented the team at the 56th Annual Congress of the International Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) and won the 2024 SIOP Award in the category of clinical trials with the presentation named:  “The BENCHISTA project: International Benchmarking of Stage at Diagnosis for six childhood solid tumours – results of a population-based, retrospective cohort study”. Huge congratulations!

ENCR 2023 IACR Scientific Conference and Project Working Group Meeting - 14th-16th November 2023

Members of the BENCHISTA team attended the ENCR 2023 IACR Congress held in Granada, Spain. The team had an opportunity to present the most updated results of the BENCHISTA Project in an oral session.

A second on-site session to meet members of the Project Working Group, key representatives and other members outside of the BENCHISTA project was also held at the ENCR 2023 IACR Conference. The meeting was a great chance to see each other again, further discuss the updated results and progress of the project, and meet representatives from other cancer registries around the world.

NEWS

The first publication of BENCHISTA focused on differences in tumour stage at diagnosis, is now available!

We are pleased to share the results of a new international study showing differences in tumour stage (how far a tumour has spread) at diagnosis for six solid childhood cancers within and outside Europe.

The International Benchmarking of Childhood Cancer Survival by Stage project, also known as BENCHISTA, is the first study to demonstrate these differences at a population level, outside clinical trials.

The first results of the study have been published in the Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, which is an independent journal with an international perspective and strong clinical focus. Please check out the publication by following the LINK

We extend our gratitude to all our collaborators; University College London (London, UK) and Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori (Milan, Italy) acting as our sponsor institutions; and our funders Children with Cancer UK and the Fondazione AIRC per la Ricerca sul Cancro.

Grant Opportunity for all European Cancer Registries

To support quality improvement of cancer registry data feeding the European Cancer Information System

The International Benchmarking of Childhood Cancer Survival project, (BENCHISTA) is a successful research collaboration between 67 population-based cancer registries (CRs) within and outside Europe, aimed to  better understanding of the reasons underlying variation in childhood cancer survival between countries and regions. Following the launching of a direct grant to Member State Authorities focused on cancer registration and the European Cancer Information System (ECIS), the BENCHISTA project encourages all cancer registries’ representatives to review this major opportunity.

The European Commission is launching a direct grant to Member State Authorities with special focus on cancer registration and the European Cancer Information System (ECIS). Under the EU4Health programme, the Commission is co-financing a project “to support quality improvement of cancer registry data feeding the European Cancer Information System”, more information in the dedicated page of the European Network of Cancer Registries’ website.

The BENCHISTA project encourages all cancer registries’ representatives to review this major opportunity. We ask that you discuss with your registry director the possibility of addressing childhood cancer as a ‘use case’ for quality improvement in the work plan of the direct grant, building on BENCHISTA’s experience. Each registry will need to engage with their national competent health authority to highlight this interest, to encourage national participation once  the relevant competent authority for participation in the direct grant is identified.
