In the dawn of the fourth industrial revolution, continuous manufacturing and chemical processes strive to comply with the technologies and concepts of Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT). Our automated smart manufacturing platforms comprise sensors and external controlled auxiliary equipment built around continuous flow reactors, and integrated with data storage and cloud computing, thus enabling the online monitoring, analysis, control and optimisation of the production process. We have developed such manufacturing platforms for continuous nanoparticle production. For the digitalisation of nanoparticle synthesis, the use of multiple online monitoring instruments integrated with the manufacturing platform – via the LabVIEW graphical software – offers live process information related to the product quality and the process conditions. Such a platform allows the “Dial-a-Nanoparticle” concept to be realised.
