Lazaros Papageorgiou


Prof Lazaros Papageorgiou received his Diploma in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 1990 and his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London in 1994. He was employed as an adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Production Engineering and Management at the Technical University of Crete during 1996-1997 and as Research Associate at the Centre for Process Systems Engineering at Imperial College London for the periods of 1994-1995 and 1997-1998. Professor Papageorgiou joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCL in 1998.

Teaching Summary 

My departmental teaching activities are in the topics of applied mathematics, computer-aided process engineering and optimisation. I am currently teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels for the following modules:

  • Mathematical Modelling and Analysis 1 (ENGF0003)
  • Advanced Process Optimisation (CENG0023)
  • Chemical Plant Design Project (CENG0016)

I am also involved in supervising MEng and MSc research projects (CENG0038 and CENG0057).

Research Summary

My main research activities lie in the areas of design and operations at plant and enterprise levels. I am particularly interested in the development of innovative mathematical programming modelling, optimisation-based methodologies and computational frameworks/tools with application to real-life problems in collaboration with industrial partners. My current research spans the application areas of supply chain optimisation, production planning and scheduling, maintenance/cleaning management, process plant layout, energy systems (infrastructure and microgrids), water systems, and machine learning.
