UCL Chemical Engineering - Black Lives Matter Statement

15 June 2020

Racism against Black people is endemic worldwide that has been going on for centuries. Systemic and institutional racism goes on not only in society but also in universities. This must change.

We are acutely aware that speaking about injustice must be backed up with actions. In the Department of Chemical Engineering, we have assembled a group to focus on taking action and implementing change to ensure anti-racism practice is at our core. The group will consult extensively with all our Black staff and students to decide on actions for the department, now and long term.

We do understand the importance of educating our white staff and students on the concept of white privilege and on how they can take meaningful steps to break down unconscious bias, be actively antiracist, and advocate for our Black staff and students. Our white staff and students must push through their discomforts about racism and use their privilege to fight for the Black community.

We acknowledge the Department of Chemical Engineering has a long way to go in regard to Black representation in more senior positions, and we understand the need to educate ourselves so that we can make long lasting, positive changes for our Black community.

We stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.
