Be an Ambassador for Change

Background: Knights versus Allies

What is the difference between ally actions and knight actions? Karen believes it comes down to whether they ultimately create systemic change or not.

Knight - lending a hand to a single person.

Ally - looking for systemic changes that will benefit many employees, longer term.

Actions: Knights versus Allies

  1. Helping individuals is laudable, but the responsibility of allies is to take actions that will have lasting, beneficial effects on systems.
  2. Suggest new processes that will change ingrained behaviours and create a more inclusive culture.
  3. Pay attention to your motivations: Focus on what will authentically support marginalized people long-term, rather than what will make you feel or look good.
