On Top of the City: Roofing, rights to space and the fight for St Petersburg’s panoramas

My research focuses on roofing in St Petersburg. One practice within the many that constitute urban exploration, roofing sees practitioners recreationally trespass on a city’s rooftops. I hope to contextualise this practice, providing insight into the cultural processes that have allowed the activity, despite its illegality, to permeate St Petersburg youth culture. My thesis will explore the different uses of the city’s rooftop (and attic) spaces and relate these to social development, urban planning, and the local imaginary in St Petersburg.
