EEC Surgery Working Group

The EEC Surgery Working Group is chaired by Dimosthenis Andreou with Michael Parry as deputy chair.

Membership was drawn from across Europe bringing together a group of surgeons as well as clinical and medical oncologists.

The group met for the first time in July 2021 and have agreed Terms of Reference.

A first priority was to create alignment between collection of surgical data for two international trials for ES that are currently in development – iEuroEwing and InterEwing 1.

The group agreed on four further projects and these are in progress:

Development of surgical guidelines for ES

Surgical guidelines for the INTER-Ewing1 and iEuroEwing trials, identify need for future research

Development of a questionnaire regarding SOPs for the surgical treatment of ES in different centers across Europe

Paper describing the current strategies (diagnosis and treatment) in ES
Lead: Jendrik Hardes

Optimize the soft tissue margins in bone ES

1. review of data in current literature
2. propose recommendations for soft tissue resection margins
3. prospective survey with regard to the radiological pré-chemo/preop aspects

Impact of pulmonary metastasectomy in ES

Evaluation of the prognostic impact of pulmonary metastasectomy y (± CTX, RTX) compared to no metastasectomy

Lead: Andreas Leithner

The surgery working group will liaise with the radiation oncology working group to ensure that the activities of the local therapy groups are complementary.

Registration now open for virtual EEC network meeting

Join us for the virtual EEC Network Meeting (on Zoom) on Tuesday 21 January 2025, 09:00 to 15:00 GMT. The meeting will include trial updates, reports on progress from the EEC working groups, a patient advocacy session and flash talks from early career researchers. Register with Eventbrite.

Apply to present a flash talk at the EEC meeting on 21 January

Are you an early career researcher working in the field of Ewing sarcoma? Would you like to present your research at the virtual EEC Network Meeting (on Zoom) on Tuesday 21 January 2025? If so, please complete this form by Sunday 8 December 2024 for a decision by 22 December 2024. The call is open to junior scientific and clinical researchers (i.e. not holding substantive career posts) working on Ewing sarcoma and the format will be up to six, three-minute flash talks, followed by a Q&A session.

Apply for "Paola Gonzato Memory Award" for bone sarcomas by 28 February 2025

The winning project will receive €3,000 and should demonstrate tangible outcomes in the advocacy or management of health services, or in improving patients’ quality of life in bone sarcomas.
