George Dalgarno

Both Bulwar and another writer of the same time, George Dalgarno, recognised that signing was unrelated to English.

  • Bulwer (1648): What though you cannot express your minds in those verball contrivances of man's invention; yet you want not speech; who have your whole body for a tongue
  • Dalgarno (1661): The deaf man has no teacher at all and though necessity may put him upon … using signs, yet those have no affinity to the language by which they that are about him do converse among themselves.
