Welcome from our new Head of Department – Professor Suzy Farid

On 1 September 2023, Professor Suzy Farid was appointed as Head of Department for UCL Biochemical Engineering, succeeding Professor Gary Lye who led the Department since 2015.

Head of Department
Suzy joined UCL as an undergraduate and PhD student in Biochemical Engineering before joining the faculty as a Lecturer in 2001. Suzy is a Professor of Bioprocess Systems Engineering, Co-Director of the EPSRC-funded Future Targeted Healthcare Manufacturing Hub, and Director of the UCL-AstraZeneca Centre of Excellence. She leads research on ‘Decisional Tools’ to plan the best route to manufacture of new biotherapeutics. Her contribution to the sector was recognised recently in her election as Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (2022) and the Manufacturer/KTN’s 30 Inspiring Women in Manufacturing (2020). Suzy’s teaching spans undergraduate, Master’s and CPD levels covering aspects ranging from bioprocess design to advanced process economics analysis to bioprocess digitalisation.
