Educating the City: new urban schools and social infrastructure project
The UCL-funded Educating the City: new urban schools and social infrastructure project has got off to a strong start, with key stakeholders from across the field coming together on the 3rd March to discuss challenges and opportunities for schools in supporting their communities.
The invited afternoon workshop agreed on some key difficulties that are preventing this sector from being more pro-active; whether in sharing their facilities beyond the school gates, collaborating with wider business and community partners, or engaging more directly with their locality.
And we began to frame some fresh approaches, aimed at shifting current assumptions about what counts as value across policies, design and space standards, risk-averse school development and governance, and day-to-day management. The next step is to bring these ideas together into a resource showing positive possibilities that can then be tested with wider stakeholders.
