This month at BREI: May 2019

May 1: BREI director Prof Andrew Edkins and chair Prof Yolande Barnes will attend the Bartlett 100 exhibition launch

May 8: Prof Yolande Barnes will attend a London Assembly Housing Committee public meeting examining Help to Buy in London. Prof Barnes has been invited to give her views on how the scheme is working on London.

May 14: Prof Andrew Edkins will attend the Agile Ageing Alliance’s fifth annual congress.

May 15: Prof Andrew Edkins will deliver a keynote address – Creating a brighter future for ourselves – at the Agile Ageing Alliance’s fifth annual congress. He will also take part in a panel discussion on “Why the smart city agenda is failing to live up to hype”.

May 16: Prof Andrew Edkins will chair “50 years after Apollo – returning to the moon”, a UCL event marketing the 50th anniversary of the NASA lunar landings. He will also present a description of UCL’s possible Off World Living Institute. 

Prof Yolande Barnes will host Van Alen Institute’s International Council. The New York-based organisation is visiting London to explore the role of the private sector in city-making, focusing on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and King’s Cross development as case studies.

May 21: Prof Yolande Barnes will take part in a panel discussion entitled “Capital trends: Implications for the real estate industry” at the BlackRock Real Assets Forum.

May 22: Prof Yolande Barnes will speak on “Beyond use classes” at the Urban Land Institute UK’s Residential Council Day.

May 23: Prof Yolande Barnes will take part in a debate on “Is property still a good investment?” hosted by Intelligence Squared and Coutts Bank

May 29: Architecture for Mental Health, a BREI interactive workshop, will explore how buildings for mental health can be transformed from spaces of control and exclusion to integrated, psychosocially supportive facilities. The workshop will be led by Dr Evangelia Chrysikou, programme director of BREI’s MSc Healthcare Facilities.
