Visiting Professor of Air Quality and Health
Professor Sani Dimitroulopoulou is a Principal Environmental Public Health Scientist on Indoor Environments within the Air Quality and Public Health Group, Environmental Hazards and Emergencies Department (EHE) in Public Health England (PHE). Sani was an Honorary Senior Lecturer at UCL IEDE since January 2016, is now appointed Visiting Professor of Air Quality and Health. Sani has a first degree in Physics from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece and a PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry and Diploma of Imperial College (DIC), from Imperial College London, which was completed in 1997.
Sani leads the indoor air quality activities within AQPH / EHE, and she is the PHE representative to the Cross Government Group on gas safety and carbon monoxide awareness. She advises Government Departments (e.g. DfE, MHCLG (Building Regs and Planning), BEIS, DEFRA) and other Organisations (e.g. World Health Organisation (WHO), National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and Royal Colleges (RCP, RCPCH), as well as CIBSE) on indoor air quality and health.
Sani is the Vice Chair of the UK Indoor Environments Group (UKIEG), a multidisciplinary network of academics, policymakers and industry, set up to co-ordinate and to provide a focus for UK activity concerned with indoor environments, health and wellbeing. She is also a member of the Executive Committee for MESAEP, (Mediterranean Scientific Association of Environmental Protection) and a member of the British Standards Committee on indoor air.
Research Summary
Sani has 30 years’ experience developed through her work at Imperial College and Building Research Establishment (BRE) in the UK as well as, at the National Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development, (Greek Environment Agency), and the University of West Macedonia in Greece. Her research interests include exposure assessment to air pollution, based on modelling and monitoring of indoor and outdoor air pollution and ventilation as well as health impact assessments and development of environmental public health indicators.
She has either participated or been a Principal Investigator in more than 40 research and consulting projects funded by UK Government Departments (e.g. DETR, DTI, DHSC) as well as by the Greek Department of Environment, research councils (e.g. EPSRC, ADMLC), the European Union (i.e. FP4, DG-DG SANCO: Executive Agency for Health and Consumers, FP7, H2020, EIT, Wellcome Trust, NIHR HPRU for HOPE, EPHECT, OFFICAIR, EURO-HEALTHY, QUASIMODO, CUSSH, VOC exposure modelling projects, respectively) and private clients. At PHE, she has been leading various research projects on IAQ and health, including the further development of the INDAIR/EXPAIR exposure modelling framework to simulate VOCs, as well as for the first time in the UK, the development of IAQ guidelines for selected VOCs. She has co-supervised MSc and PhD students through to completion and has been examiner to MSc and PhD theses.
Sani was the Editor of the 1st State of Environment report (Greek EA, 2008) and co-author of 3 books and 11 published reports. She has published more than 90 peer-reviewed papers in international scientific journals and conferences and more than 50 technical research and consulting reports.
