To make our cities energy-efficient, healthy, environmentally sustainable, and climate-resilient, Nahid’s research explores solutions through innovation driven by data and modelling, with a focus on three key challenges of sustainable built environment, namely the Urban Environment System, the Urban Building System, and the Urban Mobility System.
Urban Environment System: Nahid’s research focuses on the following aspects of the urban environment system: (i) City-integration sustainable resources and low-carbon energy technologies (solar photovoltaics and heat pumps) is a way to address the challenges related to diminishing our dependency to fossil fuels and help to mitigate global warming and climate change through reducing the emission of greenhouse gases. This integration includes not only technical integration, but also socio-economic and policy integration. (ii) Reducing the urban heat island effects particularly in summer. This can be done partly through a combination of cool roof and solar photovoltaic panels by taking into account the energy balance of the roof and solar panel and the albedo.
Urban Buildings System: Nahid’s research addresses the following challenges related to urban buildings system: How to (i) optimise the space needed for housing demands, (ii) reduce the need for new construction, (iii) improve the use of urban land, and (iv) improve living conditions and promote healthy cities through green infrastructures.
Urban Mobility System: Nahid’s research focuses on the following challenges related to urban mobility system: How to (i) reduce traffic-related air pollution, (ii) promote healthy streets (better places for walking and cycling), and (iii) reduce carbon emissions from transport on the street networks.
Nahid’s main research methods are as follows:
- Standard statistical analyses as well as multivariate statistical techniques
- Multi-Criteria decision-making
- Data-driven methods including machine learning and urban data mining
- GIS, spatial data analysis, and visualisation
- Quantitative research methods for assessing the implemented policy interventions

BiographyNahid Mohajeri studied Master in Architecture Engineering and a PhD in Sustainable Urban Design from IAU of Tehran in Iran (Science and Research Branch). Nahid received her second PhD in Geography from University College London – a joint degree between Department of Geography and CASA at the Bartlett School in 2013. Her PhD work focused on the application of thermodynamics/statistical physics to the development of innovative tools and techniques so as to quantify spatial urban patterns (buildings and transport networks) and relate those to sustainability.
Nahid is a Senior Research Fellow in Building Physics and Urban Modelling at UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering (IEDE). Nahid works on “Complex Urban Systems for Sustainability and Health (CUSSH)” a project funded by the Wellcome Trust. The focus of Nahid’s work in the CUSSH project is primarily on the applications of data analytics and Machine Learning for assessing the policy interventions in sustainability and health at the city scale.
Before joining UCL in 2020, Nahid was at the Environmental Change Institute (ECI) - University of Oxford – where her work was primarily on using Machine Learning (ML) for spatial optimisation and sustainable housing development, a project funded by the Alan Turing Institute. Nahid was awarded a competitive and high-prestige 2-year Advanced Postdoc Mobility Fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) to work at the University of Oxford – the Sustainable Urban Development Programme (as a Visiting Research Fellow). Nahid also worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) – Department of Architecture, Civil and Environment Engineering - Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory – from 2013 to 2017. At EPFL, Nahid was a group leader (for Complex Urban Systems), received several large grants from Swiss National Science Foundation and Swiss Competence Centre for Energy Research, and supervised more than 12 Master students and 2 Doctoral students.
