UK Centre for Moisture in Buildings launches to a full house of industry experts

1 June 2016

On Wednesday 25 May, the UK Centre for Moisture in Buildings (UKCMB) held its launch conference at UCL.

UKCMB Launch Conference

The launch programme opened with presentations from the Swedish Moisture Centre, (FuktCentrum), an international partner of the UKCMB. The FuktCentrum was established in 2000 and consists of over 40 researchers. The UKCMB was then introduced by Managing Director, Neil May, followed by presentations on current UKCMB projects.

The main aim of the day was to open the floor to industry and academic experts through five open discussion sessions:

  • Retrofit risks and unknowns
  • Flooding and escape of water
  • Timber in buildings
  • Improving moisture safety in buildings in practice
  • Moisture and people in buildings (health and building use)

These sessions led to some very interesting discussions which will inform the direction of the UKCMB.

The UKCMB has been well received by many and has featured in online and printed publications.

The UKCMB is an independent, not for profit, public good organisation run by University College London, the Building Research Establishment (BRE), Heriot Watt University and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The UKCMB works in a rigorous and transparent manner together with partners from academia, government, industry and the public to substantially improve the way moisture risk is understood and managed in the UK.

The aim of the UKCMB is the development of a moisture-safe built environment in the UK.

The Core Knowledge Partners (CKPs) for the UKCMB are UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering (UCL IEDE, which is part of BSEER) and UCL Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (UCL CEGE), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and Heriot Watt University (HWU).
