Our history

UCL was founded in 1826 with a bold and radical agenda, opening up higher education in England to all for the very first time.

At UCL IEDE, we share that radical ethos, responding to the problems and opportunities of the world in ways that are creative, effective and responsible.

Our research, programmes and people have a rich history. Some key dates:


1960     Professor Llewelyn-Davies introduced Building Science at The Bartlett


1965     Professor Hopkinson appointed the first Chair in Environmental Design and Engineering


1978     MSc in Environmental Design and Engineering (EDE) established


1987     MSc in Light and Lighting (L&L) established


1992     The Bartlett School of Graduate Studies established


1992     MSc in Facility and Environment Management (FEM) established


2006     First EPSRC Platform Grant Award (2006-2011)


2007     The Head of The Bartlett School of Graduate Studies founds the UCL Energy Institute


2010     MSc in EDE receives CIBSE's Buro Happold Brilliant Award


2011     Second EPSRC Platform Grant Award (2011-2016)


2014     The Bartlett School of Graduate Studies ceases to exist and the UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering (IEDE) is established


2015     50th anniversary of research and teaching in EDE at The Bartlett (1965-2015)


2017     Historic third EPSRC Platform Grant for ‘Built Environment Systems Thinking’

             MSc in Health Wellbeing and Sustainable Buildings and MEng Engineering and Architectural Design established


2018     IEDE expands to new research and teaching facilities in HereEast, Queen Elisabeth Olympic Park

             MSc in Smart Buildings and Digital Engineering established


2020    IEDE celebrates 55 years of Environmental Design and Engineering in The Bartlett
