The development of wind energy in the UK

publications

5 June 2013

The UK has established ambitious targets for renewable energy, and has established itself as the leading market for offshore wind power. This paper adopts an innovation system perspective to understanding the development of the wind energy sector in the UK. The paper examines the way in which the policy mix supporting wind is addressing key weaknesses in the UK wind innovation system. Drawing on comparative analysis of wind policy development in the US, other EU countries and China, the paper draws conclusions about the UK’s policy path and the lessons that can be drawn for low-carbon technology policy. In particular, the paper highlights how trends in wind energy patenting are responding to the UK's emphasis on offshore wind.
