Research summary
Gesche is working as a Senior Research Associate at the UCL Energy Institute and as a Lecturer in UCL IEDE. Within the CREDS project (https://www.creds.ac.uk/) she is leading the subproject on comfort & control. She is also leading a project on Covid-19 and energy use with colleagues from the University of Lancaster and the University of Sussex.
Gesche has previously researched which factors determine gas and electricity consumption in nationally representative samples. She has also worked on the relationship between light and thermal comfort, with the aim of broadening the range of comfortable temperatures. She linked empirically derived heating demand temperatures and duration of heating periods in domestic buildings to socio- and building-demographics, and compared empirical data to assumptions of the BREDEM’ (Building Research Establishment Domestic Energy Model) family of models, and to explore the scope for targeted interventions to reduce domestic energy consumption.
More recently, spanning her roles at EI and IEDe, she is working on the links between climate change, mental health and the built environment.
Teaching summary
Gesche is module lead for "Wellbeing in Buildings - Theory & Practice", part of the Health, Wellbeing and Sustainable Building MSc. Gesche regularly gives guest lectures in the MRes and the MSc at the Energy Institute on the usage of experimental methods in energy research and on open science practices. She has also previously taught on energy consumption in non-domestic properties and on behaviour change (BA).

Biography
Gesche joined UCL as a Research Associate in August 2012 where she is now working as Senior Research Associate in the CREDS project. Prior to joining the EI, Gesche worked for 18 months as aResearch Fellow at the University of Greenwich, testing interventions aimed at reducing domestic energy consumption as part of the EPSRC/E.ON funded‘Carbon, Control, and Comfort’ project. Gesche obtained a PhD in Psychology(visual cognitive neuroscience) from the University of Giessen, Germany, in 2010.
