UCL Energy Institute Director provides insights on Electricity Strategy on BBC Guernsey
28 June 2023
Guernsey's local government has unveiled its Electricity Strategy up to 2050 and how the island is working towards zero-carbon.
Questions addressed were around the plan, and whether should an island community be doing more or better and how does it compare to other countries and jurisdictions.
UCL Energy Director Prof Catalina Spataru said:
“The Electricity Strategy for Guernsey presents a comprehensive plan that address the island’s energy need. To evaluate whether Guernsey should be doing more, the island’s energy strategy should be tailored to its specific needs and capabilities.
There are other islands from where lessons learnt could be considered. Such as Orkney, which made significant progress in renewable energy adoption, particularly wind and tidal power. Currently around 10% of the population produce their own power. Guernsey could assess Orkney’s experiences to gain insights into community engagement, finance and investments.”
