UCL Energy Director Neil Strachan interviewed by ITV London news for item on eco-friendly homes

26 April 2019

The news item featured a home in Walthamstow, North London, whose owner took a number of small-scale measures to reduce the project’s impact on the environment compared to standard building projects.

On Tuesday 23 April, ITV London news reported on a new kitchen extension built with almost zero waste, achieved through measures such as the use of reclaimed timber. While the upfront cost was higher than a mass-market alternative, the owner expects the bespoke kitchen to last much longer.

Commenting on the trend for individuals to take the lead in adopting greener building projects, Professor Neil Strachan said:

“Fundamentally, the government reflects society’s preferences, and if you have these early adopters, that sends out a message to government that there is a group of people – consumers and voters – who actually want change. And probably a much larger group of people who want change but aren’t as pro-active. And then government policy should reflect society’s preferencesFundamentally, the government reflects society’s preferences, and if you have these early adopters, that sends out a message to government that there is a group of people – consumers and voters – who actually want change. Other green aspects of the project included the use of batons found in a skip to support the underfloor insulation. The owner has also installed special thermostats on every radiator in the house, all connected to an app, allowing room temperatures to be optimally controlled. She also opted for the most energy efficient kitchen appliances, and hopes to start saving money through lower energy consumption within a year.
