Title: Study of the trade-off between accessibility and house location in marginal groups of the population: analysis of urban illegal and peripheral settlements.

Keywords: Accessibility, housing policies, social exclusion, transport policies, social inequalities, informality

My proposal aims to explore travel behaviour and housing location in lower-income groups of the population of different cities that, depending of particular characteristics of the context, government strength and planning capacity, are more or less disposed to accept certain costs and risks in order to supply their need of housing and basic services.

The observed behaviour of marginal population in peripheral areas of cities like Bogotá (Colombia) seems to be against the general principles of traditional residential location models that consider transport characteristics, evidencing predisposition to reducing the mobility of certain members of the household in order to paying less in housing and basic services costs and guaranteeing the elevated transport costs of the members of the family that conduct mandatory activities.

I aim to study illegal settlements on the periphery of the cities based on the case study of Bogotá in search for a better understanding of the sacrifices that the poorest people are willing to make in order to assure a house for their family in terms of reduced accessibility, exclusion and acceptance of risks. In addition I will analyse the effect of main variables related to transport and housing in the decision making processes, and the influence of regulations and developmental characteristics in the proliferation of this kind of conducts in developing cities. As a result, I intend to contribute to the debate around housing and transport policies in marginal populations and provide additional elements for assessing these issues for policy development and formulation of response strategies.
