BSSC Associate Professor and Engineering for International Development Research Centre Director, Dr Priti Parikh, has been recognised as part of the 2022 Top 50 Women in Engineering WE50 Awards.

This award is organised by the Women's Engineering Society (WES) and sponsored by Ball Corporation. The award celebrates the diverse range of skills and talent displayed by female engineers who now make 16.5% of all engineers in the UK.

Even though each engineer in the list is unique, a unifying theme is that there is a focus on sustainability and the environment. Female engineers and the organisations they work for – from start-ups to construction giants – are becoming increasingly aware of the impact the engineering sector has on the environment and the climate.

Dr Parikh won the Provost Education Award in 2018 and the Sustainability Research Award in 2021 for her contribution to engineering and international development. Dr Parikh set up the MSc in Engineering for International Development to influence engineering curriculum so that students are better able to address global challenges. She also set up and now leads the Engineering for International Development Research Centre. The centre researches appropriate infrastructure solutions in resource challenged settings and links with the Sustainable Development Goals.

She has substantial industry experience and a research based in infrastructure planning for cities to cover the areas of financial planning, institutional frameworks, and societal impact. She has substantial in-country experience in South Asia, Africa and UK working with local governments and slum communities and has led multi- sectoral projects at both city and community scale. She is ICE Council Member and was invited to join the board of Trustees for Happold Foundation and Engineer's Against Poverty. In 2019, she was recognised as an Engineers Without Borders Changemaker.

Dr Priti Parikh said: Honoured to be recognised as one of the top 50 Women in Engineering – Inventors and Innovators. With global challenges such as climate change, poverty, and urbanisation it is time for us to work across disciplines and sectors to develop innovative solutions for infrastructure. I am grateful to my team, colleagues and mentors who have supported me and inspired me through my journey. Thanks to the Women’s Engineering Society for creating these awards to celebrate women in engineering.”
