1 October 2021

The competition, now in its third year, is hosted by Architizer and recognises talent in the field of architectural drawing.

The Top Student Prize was won by Bartlett Graduate Sabina Blasiotti, for her drawing ‘Outlines of Nuclear Geography’.  The mountain elevation in her drawing represents a towering sediment of nuclear waste materials, organised in hierarchies of volume and radioactive contamination, and draws attention to decontamination technologies and potential reuse projects. Her drawing responds to the design of nuclear waste deterrent markers. Her drawing was part of her final year Architecture MArch project 'The Village Inside the Nuclear Power Plant'.

Bartlett students Christian Coackley and John Clayson also achieved Commendations for their respective drawings, ‘The Earth Embassy’ and ‘A(lice) I(n) Www.onderland’. Christian’s drawing uses the idea of a failed and repurposed lunar colony base to speculate on the revival of the revolutionary ideals embodied by John F. Kennedy. John’s drawing uses Lewis Carroll’s much-loved story as an entry point and medium to explore the convergence of the ways in which humans and machines experience the world, and the manifestation of the relationship between the physical and virtual.

A Special Mention was awarded to incoming Architecture MArch student Olivia O’Callaghan for Most Original Abstract for ‘Death of the Last Tree’.

The competition was judged by a panel of 14 jurors from across the architecture and design industries, as well as journalists who write about the industry.

Sabina was awarded the top prize of £2500, and her drawing will be featured in Architizer Journall, along with an interview with her. Christian and John’s drawings will be included in Architizer’s Winner’s Announcement, which names the two Top Winners and ten Commended Entries, and all three students will be featured in Architizer’s annual 100 Drawings That Tell Powerful Stories About Architecture story.

All three students’ work was exhibited at the recent Bartlett Summer Show, which is archived online for viewers to revisit.
