Bartlett School of Architecture at World Toilet Summit in South Africa

3 January 2013

Penner Toilet Convention

Dr. Barbara Penner from the Bartlett School of Architecture took part in the World Toilet Summit 2012 in Durban, South Africa where she delivered a plenary lecture on the subject of campaigns to make toilets more accessible and inclusive from nineteenth century to present.

The themes of this year's summit were Human Rights and the Right to Sanitation (affirmed in the UN Declaration of 2010), and Sustainable Health and Hygiene Practices, particularly pertinent in the context of Africa, where 600 million people still lack access to sanitation and thousands of children under 5 still die each year due to faecally transmitted diseases.

The conference brought together several hundred delegates from politicians to representatives of various health organisations and NGOs to entrepreneurs to academics.  During her trip to South Africa, Dr. Penner also joined a site visit to a local primary school, which has recently benefited from the installation of a new toilet block.
