Writtle Calling: a pop-up radio station

Bartlett Teaching Fellow, Matthew Butcher, has just completed a collaborative project – a temporary radio station transmitting live arts broadcasts – with artist Melissa Appleton and CADE (Centre for Arts and Design in the Environment).

'Writtle Calling' is located in the Essex landscape, near the site of  ‘2 Emma Toc’, a 1922 radio station considered to be the first regular UK broadcaster, which went out every Tuesday from an ex-army hut.

The radio structure designed by Matthew Butcher (also of Post Works) takes its inspiration from the original hut and agricultural vernaculars sampled from the local area.  

Broadcasting for a week in September, the station featured contributions from a plethora of artists including David Toop, Fabian Peake, Pablo Bronstein and Edwin Burdis, culminating in a public event on the 15th of September.
