Join us for the UK book launch of Geoffrey Bawa: Drawing From the Archives, edited by Shayari de Silva, and published by Lars Müller Publishers with The Geoffrey Bawa Trust.

The Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa (1919-2003) fused sensitivity to local context with the technological discoveries and design principles of modernism in his work. Gathering essays by scholars and writers across a multitude of disciplines – including architecture, photography, geography, urban design and art history – this volume spotlights the architectural drawings of Bawa’s practice. Illustrated with more than 200 drawings and photographs, many of which have never before been published, the book delves into the central, multipronged role of the medium in Bawa’s work, from ideation to instruction to post-construction review. Through the context of the archive, the anthology also explores the identity of post-independence Sri Lanka, looking at the interplay between ideas and images, drawings and buildings and, above all, a sense of place.

A talk by the volume’s editor, Shayari de Silva, Chief Curator, The Geoffrey Bawa Trust, will be followed by short responses from Albert Brenchat Aguilar, The Bartlett School of Architecture, and Pushpa Arabindoo, Geography, UCL. The event will be chaired by Tariq Jazeel, SPRC / Geography, UCL.

This event is co-hosted by The Bartlett School of Architecture and UCL’s Centre for the Study of South Asia and the Indian Ocean World.
