Anthony Van Sertima

The workshop will be led by SGM Lighting and Anthony Van Sertima, who is an industry professional. Anthony started in has worked studied or worked fulltime in lighting for 20 years. Anthony has a BA(Hons) in Lighting design, and has worked in numerous places and venues including the National Theatre, The Royal Opera House, as well as designing production for corporate events, festivals, and large scale private events. Anthony now works as Director of Brands for a number of brands including SGM Light, Roxx, Madrix in the UK.


Abstract

Join us for an introduction to the world of lighting design and lighting technology. This workshop is designed to give you an overview of lighting control systems, lighting fixtures and LED technology that shape the art of lighting. Gain insight to how lighting is used when illuminating various spaces, from opera houses to concert stages, to architecture and art installations. You will gain insights into the fascinating interplay between light and ambiance.


Workshop Detail

  • Lighting History: a brief overview of the history of lighting technology and lighting design where we are today, and where we may be in the future.
     
  • Lighting Control and Protocols: Learn about the various protocols and systems used in lighting control, such as DMX, Art-Net, and sACN, and gain hands-on experience in setting up and programming lighting systems.
     
  • Types of Lighting Fixtures: Explore the characteristics and applications of various types, including spotlights, floodlights, fresnels, ellipsoidals, and more. Understand how each fixture type contributes to the overall visual composition and mood of a space.
     
  • LED Technology: Explore the principles behind LED’s, their operation, their benefits, energy efficiency, color rendering capabilities, and how to integrate them seamlessly into lighting designs.
     
  • Units of Light Measurements: Shed light on the technical aspects of lighting. Discover the fundamental units of light measurement, such as lumens, lux, and footcandles, and understand why these measurements are used in practical lighting applications.
     
  • Styles of Lighting: Explore the distinctive lighting styles used in various artistic disciplines, from the dramatic and evocative lighting of operas to the vibrant energy of concert lighting and the creative possibilities in art installations.
